Private Estate Wedding in Sonoma County
A private estate wedding in Sonoma County offers one of the most romantic ways to celebrate in Northern California wine country. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, golden light, and relaxed luxury, this wedding beautifully captures the charm that makes Sonoma County such a sought-after destination for couples planning an elegant, personalized celebration. From the intimate outdoor ceremony to the refined reception details, every moment reflects the timeless appeal of a Sonoma estate wedding.
Northern California offers a setting that naturally lends itself to intimate, experience-driven weddings. With open landscapes, and the potential for a slower pace, private estate celebrations allow couples to create something deeply personal — shaped by the land, the light, and the people gathered together.
This wedding was set at a residential estate on a vineyard in Sonoma. They elected to keep their guest list to about 80 people, allowing them to add structure in other places – planning, florals and photography. Their home had a great layout for guests to maneuver to and from cocktail hour, the ceremony and reception which kept everyone connected and in tune with each other throughout the day and evening. They valued candid photography, so for most of the day, I was a fly on the wall. Interacting with their guests, family and wedding party naturally.
When it came time for photos of the two of them, we went out to their field around sunset, spent about 20 minutes and raced back to their reception. When everyone is on-site, it creates a huge ease on you, as the couple. This impacts travel time from one area to the next as well as maintaining an intimate feeling with your guests.
Why Couples Choose Private Estate Weddings in Sonoma County
Many couples planning a wedding in Sonoma are drawn to private estates for the freedom they offer. Without the constraints of a standard venue timeline, celebrations can unfold at a more natural pace. Quiet mornings on the property and late night reception parties are all feasible.
Private estate weddings also allow for a greater level of personalization. Design choices feel intentional rather than prescribed, guest experiences feel more immersive, and the setting itself becomes part of the story. Surrounded by Sonoma’s landscape, these weddings often feel less like an event and more like a gathering rooted in place.

Documenting a Sonoma County Wedding at a Private Residence
Photographing a wedding at a private estate requires an observant approach. With fewer formal structures in place, it takes a different type of effort to control the flow of the day. This is where hiring a coordinator at least three months out is crucial. Creating small spaces throughout the property is how to invite a natural pace, while allowing things to unfold naturally.
Things to consider for hosting a wedding at a private residence:
– Furniture, tables, chairs and all decor/arrangements will need to be ordered from a rental company.
– Understand what type of catering you plan to hire, and make sure you have the appropriate set up and space for them to prepare your food.
– Dj’s often require a lot of power and outlets. Your coordinator and planner should be able to make plans for this.
– Outdoor bathrooms, or traveling restrooms have become extremely popular for private residence events. This helps keep guests out of your home and connected to the party.
– Parking can be one of the largest issues when it comes to private estate events. There are multiple options keep the day running smoothly; shuttles to and from specified hotels, creating a parking lot on the property, or asking guests to utilize a ride share.
– While private residences have bedrooms, space can get crowded in a hurry. Consider this when choosing the size of your wedding party and determining prior to the wedding day how you’ll utilize your getting ready spaces. The more you plan ahead, the more you’ll be able to flow through the day without stress.
How I Approach photographing Weddings
I value organic moments, working with a professional team and connecting with my clients. Documentary photography allows you to ease into your day and go with the flow. I approach your wedding day unobtrusively so you can really lean in – to your partner, your guests, and your celebration.
When the moments arise when direction is necessary, I’ll be there to walk you through it. Wedding party, family photos and your personal formal photos all contain structure.
During cocktail hour, I find allowing room for movement, emotion, and the environment to coexist invites your guests to be real and lean in. These in-between moments of you connecting with your guests can be some of the most special.
I observe closely and respond intuitively. This allows the day to happen naturally, as it is, preserving both the quiet in-between moments and the larger rhythm of the celebration. The result is imagery that feels refined yet unforced, grounded in place and true to the people at its center – you.
